New Cloudmanic Labs Website

We are very pleased to announce that Cloudmanic Labs has a new website. This website overhaul is long over due!! Since, Cloudmanic Labs spun off from Matthews Etc. Internet Services we have been operating with a very poor web site and brand identity. Thanks to the hard work by Josh Hemsley at http://www.thevisualclick.com (@joshhemsley) we have a fresh new look and feel. We also want to thank Amber at http://www.amberweinberg.com (@amberweinberg) for her hard work putting the site together. Without these partners “redo public site” would still be sitting on our todo list.

The reason the new site was so important is many of our products are getting very very close to becoming live and functional. Elevation Fitness (http://www.elevationfit.com) is days away from being live and ready for public use. Mealstub (http://www.mealstub.com) should be launching sometime in January. RentalBooks will be launched during the first quarter of 2010. While CloudCrm (http://www.mycloudcrm.com) does not have a planned launch yet, it is very close. We recommend visiting these sites and signing up for our news letters.

Let us know how you like our new site!!! We are very excited!! Thanks again to our partners that help launch this site.

How the world is changing…….

For years now the process of being a software developer was; write some java or C++ code, slapping a UI on it, packaging it up, giving it to a distributor, and bam every time Joe software buyer purchased your software from Office Max you got a check in the mail. Then the process changed a little bit when software makers started to sell their wares on the Internet instead of through a distributor at Office Max. Ok, now the developer could sell direct to the consumer through a website and a download but they had to hire a web designer to whip them up some sort of sales site; no big deal the margins were way higher selling software direct to the consumer.

Well, times are a changing. Software is starting to become hosted software, or cloud based software. The consumer now uses the software from the a web browser, and nothing is ever installed on the consumer’s computer. I am writing this article using Google docs instead of Microsoft word.

earth tout How the world is changing.......

So how does this affect the development process?? Well, it adds tons of extra overhead. Outside of just writing the web application the developer needs to become a sysadmin, account manager, support person, and more. Lets say I have a web service I want to sell for $20 a month. I have to manage the servers, manage the account (make sure the credit card on file is run each month and the customer is invoiced), I have to keep up-to-date on bugs and security holes because hackers are always finding new ways in. Lastly, people expect new features at a much faster rate. This drives up costs, days to market, and on going maintenance issues.

The days of writing compiled software that you can sell are ending. Some of the best compiled software I use today was written in week by software hacker. These small software developers cannot push their wares like they use too. Now, it costs millions to take a web application to the market quickly and maintain it. Not, every software developer wants to go out and raise venture capital money just to create and sell software.

Until we can better streamline web application development, bigger more well funded companies are going to dominate the software market. We see this as a problem and are building tools and services to help lower the overhead of selling a web application. More details to follow in up and coming months.

So What Is Up With The New Name? Cloudmanic Labs, LLC

As if you even had to ask! It describes us perfectly. The first part of the name is very easy. The cloud refers to running software on the cloud (AKA the Internet). For more info on what the cloud is check out Cloud Computing @ Wikipedia.org .

The second part is prefect as well. If you visit dictionary.com, “manic” is defined by “excitement, madness, insanity”. Each one of those words describe how we feel about writing software applications that run on the cloud (the Internet). We spend just about everyday or our live writing software as a service applications to run on the cloud. The pile of Mountain Dew bottle proves it!!!

Lastly, the labs part refers to our way of work. Everyday is a new experiment for us. “If I move this to over there will the application get faster?”, “If I use new new just out of beta plugin will our database be less bloated?”.

Hope you find the name as perfect as we do.

We are live! The new CloudmanicLabs.com

Just over a year ago Matthews Etc. Internet Services spun out Cloudmanic Labs, a company focusing on software as a service solutions for medium and small businesses. Well, it took just over a year for us to get our new site up and branded with our new name but its done and here we are. Just been crazy busy.

Matthews Etc. Internet Services has focused for many years on being a one stop shop for small and medium size businesses when it comes to their web presents (or just about any technological need). Times have changed. Some of the basic phone calls we use to get have gone away…..”Could you install a CMS system for us”, “Can you install a blog for us”. We are now getting calls like “I have this amazing web application idea I want to take to market could you help us do this”. This is for the better. People are getting more educated on how to install and manage basic websites and they are are starting to realize running software on the web is way better. The last reason we love this shift is we are truly passionate about moving desktop applications from the native computer to the cloud. So no more Matthews Etc. Internet Services has it use to be. Matthews Etc. Internet Services is still around and will be maintaining past clients and will be supporting Cloudmanic Labs at an IT level.

Cloudmanic Labs is as it sounds a group focused on innovating web technologies to further the growth of moving software to the clouds. Everyday, we are looking at how we can help businesses focus on the business and less on the IT needs. Don’t worry we are still based in Portland, Oregon!

Cloudmanic.com is in a very simple state right now but we plan to keep it up to date with what we are up to. If you are a current client nothing has changed, we are still the same old consulting firm you have grown to know and love. If you are a new client, we are welcoming new business everyday give us a call or an email and we can see what we can do to help you. If you are a business bookmark our blog for updates on our up and coming software as a service products….coming in early 2010.
